Bangladesh sees first female ‘suicide bomber’

A female militant has blown herself up during a police raid in a militant hideout at Dhaka’s Ashkona, in what appears to be the first suicide attack by a woman in Bangladesh.

“The female militant, clad in burqa, came out of the flat with a 7-year-old girl around 12:20pm on Saturday. She carried out the blast when police asked her to surrender,” CTTC Chief Monirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.

Monirul later confirmed the woman died in the blast.

The blast injured the girl and two policemen. The girl’s identity and her relation with the woman could not be ascertained yet.“Another militant is still inside the house,” he added.CTTC unit officials suspect the attacker’s husband may also be involved with militancy.

Sanowar said they laid siege to the house early Saturday morning based on a tip about Musa, a militant on the run. Although Musa was not found during the raid, there were others.

According to the police, there were seven people inside the flat. Four of them – two women and two children – came out in the morning when asked to surrender.Hours later, the CTTC gave the rest inside a two-minute ultimatum to lay down their arms.

“At that moment, a woman came out with a girl and blew herself up while chanting ‘We will go to heaven’,” Sanowar said.
